We’re the American youth. … We’re the guys in high school your parents warned you to stay away from. That’s what we’re like on stage and off. The kids won’t buy albums from phonies. – Nikki Sixx, 1983
LOS ANGELES /PRNewswire/ — Just when rock was getting soft, Motley Crue knocked it on its ass. Dripping with lust and a take-no-sh** attitude, the Crue was dismissed by critics and reviled by the holier-than-thou. Now, more than 20 years after strutting onto the scene, after more than 40 million copies sold, Motley Crue has become synonymous with sleazy, sweaty, rebellious rock.
THE MOTLEY CRUE edition of 20TH CENTURY MASTERS/THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION (Hip-O Records), released October 7, 2003, gathers for the first time 12 of the Crue’s signature moments. Spanning the years 1982 to 2000, from its first album to its most recent original release, of 20TH CENTURY MASTERS/THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION OF MOTLEY CRUE is less about chart hits than about Crue classics.
Formed in Hollywood in 1981 by bassist Nikki Sixx, drummer Tommy Lee, guitarist Mick Mars and lead singer Vince Neil, Motley Crue self-produced TOO FAST FOR LOVE. Later in 1982, the band signed to Elektra/Asylum, which re-released the album that included Piece Of Your Action. The following year they broke through with SHOUT AT THE DEVIL, from which 20TH CENTURY MASTERS/THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION OF MOTLEY CRUE culls the title track and Too Young To Fall In Love.
But it was with 1985’s THEATRE OF PAIN that the Crue became stars. Featuring Home Sweet Home, the first power ballad aired on MTV (a 1991 version would go Top 40), the album shot to #7 and quadruple platinum. 1987’s party-metal GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS peaked at #2, led by the Top 20 title track, and became the band’s third straight quadruple platinum. The album also featured All In The Name Of … written for and about the then underage porn star Traci Lords. 1989’s DR. FEELGOOD did even better, reaching #1 and six times platinum and spinning off the Top 30 Kickstart My Heart.
The 1991 retrospective DECADE OF DECADENCE included Rock N Roll Junkie (heard on THE ADVENTURES OF FORD FAIRLANE soundtrack the year before) and an unreleased cover of the Sex Pistols landmark Anarchy In The U.K. With Neil’s exit, John Corabi was enlisted for 1993’s gold Top 10 MOTLEY CRUE, with Hooligan’s Holiday. Neil returned for 1997’s GENERATION SWINE, again gold and Top 10, marked by its title track. After Lee was replaced by Ozzy Osbourne drummer Randy Castillo, NEW TATTOO, with Hell On High Heels, appeared in 2000.
As Sixx said in 1983, We ll never be what others want us to be. We ll always be Motley Crue no matter what’s in style.
The series 20TH CENTURY MASTERS/THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION, featuring new best of albums from the most significant music artists of the past century, is the most successful single artist series in music history.
