This was a funny read, so I thought I would share. How stoopid does Lars think people are? I know that I wasn’t scared, overwhelmed, or challenged by St. Anger. I was pissed off at it and couldn’t even make it through the first track at the listening station at the record store! Article follows… . [i:97f4a1f855]METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has told the Rocky Mountain News that he understands why understand why some fans were initially thrown by the thrashing speed-metal nature of the band’s latest album, St. Anger . It’s so beating. I can understand now how challenging the record was, he said. Compared to a song like Wherever I May Roam, it sounds like World War III. It makes the Black Album sound like BON JOVI or something. I can understand that some of the people into the more straightforward things we’ve done can be scared [listening to St. Anger ]. It’s OK to be scared and overwhelmed and challenged. I’m proud that we didn’t (wimp) out. A couple of times we kinda set out to make a record that was raw and a little more aggressive and we kinda (wimped) out. We started cleaning things up, we started putting James (Hetfield’s) vocals in tune. We left St. Anger as raw as it was. And longtime fans knew it wasn’t out of character for the band. … And Justice For All is borderline unlistenable to my ears, Ulrich said of the band’s classic 1988 release. Then again, when we put Fade to Black on our second record [ Ride the Lightning ], a lot of the hardcore fans were freaking out – Oh my God, an acoustic guitar, they’ve lost it! That was what, 21 years ago or something? For a band that lost it 21 years ago, I think we’re doing OK. [/i:97f4a1f855] – said Thomas Vrazel on Mar 03, 2004
I liked the album, but only after about 10 listens. But not cuz it ’sounded like WWIII. The only challenge was getting past the crappy drums. Don’t know why the listen to Bob anymore. He’s lost it. Any true fan would only be disappointed. Actually, I think it sounded better on the DVD. Guess Bob couldn’t get his dirty little hands on that one. 😆 – said Mister B on Mar 03, 2004
Well, I wouldn’t blame Bob too much. I think it’s more and more evident that Lars pretty much trys to run the show. At least that’s the way it seems to me. I think he is mostly to blame for what transpires with Metallica and the things they do. PLUS, I bet he was the reason why Kirk has no solos on this record! You cannot tell me that Kirk was tired of soloing, or thought that not ONE song could have had a guitar solo. You have no idea how much crap they gave Kirk and the boys on the Zakk Wylde messageboard, of which I also peruse, for not having any soloing period. Anyway, Metallica USED to be my favorite band, but they lost me after the Black album… .. – said Thomas Vrazel on Mar 03, 2004
ya lars like is a control freak, napster says it all. – said PAUZED on Mar 03, 2004
lars said a long time ago i dont care if people down load my music. so watz he go and do, mmmmm makes you think. 👿 – said PAUZED on Mar 03, 2004
I will admit, though… their interview on Uranium was quite entertaining. I almost regained respect for them. 😆 – said Mister B on Mar 03, 2004

I never really lost respect for them, just pretty much Lars. Everytime he opens his mouth, crap comes out. And he has pretty much turned into the figurehead of the band. Him and James bump heads quite a bit. You can tell on the videos for the making of the Black album. And if you watch the trailer for that documentary of theirs coming out, Some Kind Of Monster , Lars pisses James off quite a bit there too. It just seems to me, more and more, that Lars runs the band, and the rest of them just follow his lead. I think they are just in it for the money now. Just my 2 cents… .. – said Thomas Vrazel on Mar 03, 2004
Yeah, I actually would like to see that. Looks like it’s be a pretty well done documentary. – said Mister B on Apr 04, 2004
Well, I definitely want to see it. The guys that made it are award winning documentary directors. From some of the reviews I have read, they say that it is very well done. Film Threat, though, trashed it more for the band being a bunch of babies. Well, more like James and Lars being babies, and Kirk attempting to be the peacemaker. In the review they said that Jason Newsted and Dave Mustaine, who appear in the movie, were the only sane one’s in the movie. LOL. You should look up the review for it on Film Threat. It was a great read… .. – said Thomas Vrazel on Apr 04, 2004
when is going to be released? – said PAUZED on Apr 04, 2004
Shouldnt a review be more concerned about the fillmmaking? But the again, I guess subject matter plays a role in Documentaries. – said Mister B on Apr 04, 2004
I saw this on www.bravewords.com recently: Out-of-touch METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett spoke to the DenverPost.com recently about their former peers. Hammett commented: You look at DEF LEPPARD, BON JOVI, JUDAS PRIEST and IRON MAIDEN, and it’s a trip to see bands that were big influences on us and not relevant anymore. As for Metallica, I became a fan when the Black Album came out. And some tracks after that. My favorite song though is For Whom The Bells Toll . But St. Anger , does not appeal to me at all! I don’t even get requests for anything off that album. Maybe they have read all the reviews and complaints from fans and media and maybe the next disk will be more to the liking of 90% of Planet Earth! – said theloudestrock on Apr 04, 2004
Wouldnt that be nice. Make an album we like: what a concept. 😆 – said Mister B on Apr 04, 2004

I think they need to stick to the stuff that got them here in the first place, and not try and sound like the little punks who have nt hit puberty yet. – said TriPower on Apr 04, 2004
St. Anger sucked – end of story. – said rhiannon on Apr 04, 2004
You guys who are complaining about Metallica have got to be the crazy ones… not Lars. Ok, so maybe he likes control, but that just proves that he has a strong opinion about the band. He complains about Napster, yes, but doesn’t he sortof have a right to? He works hard at what he does and wants to get paid for it. I am sure that he is not short on money and probably never will be, but that is not the point. Napster and other places similar to that really are, in a way, stealing from the bands. The way that bands make money is through sold CD’s, not downloaded songs. Also, one of you was talking about how his drumming is not good… I would like to know which one of their songs he does not do a great job in? Seriously, Lars is one of the greatest drummers around. And come on, Metallica has been around for so long, give them a break, they are older than most bands and they still kick ass!! A true fan of Metallica would think the same way. Some albums are better than others… just like every single band out there. 😀 – said emilee81 on Jul 07, 2004
OK it’s no ..Justice but everyone should be forced to listen to The Memory Remains for perspective on what’s truly bad! OK, not really.. hearing Marianne Faithfull cackle La da da da DAH da 1 more time would be torture! 😆 Paine – said CrazyMikePaine on Jul 07, 2004
