This was definitely a last minute plan that happened out of the blue. I was originally planning on not going to this concert, because there were no general admission floor seats available. I cannot stand the thought of a ticket seat, and possibly getting stuck next to some annoying jerk that I ll have to deal with all night. With general admission, if someone is annoying, I can just get up and walk away. Well at last minute, some floor seats were made available. Why you ask? Because this is a Clear Channel Event, and most of the floor seats were apparently taken by Clear Channel Station Rock 101’s people, to give out as prizes for radio listeners. Well Rock 101 folded the Friday before this show and a bunch of radio winners were left without tickets… so I called the Toyota Center Box Office and scored the very last floor seat in town. About $87.25 US dollars and a few phone calls later to set up a ride to the show (so I would not have to pay another 10 US dollars for parking) and off I am to the rock show!
Godsmack opened the show with Straight Out Of Line surprisingly shot off some pyrotechnics after their first song. Hold Up!!!!!! The opening band for]Metallica is shooting off pyrotechnics… .yep, I already got my money’s worth. The band also pummeled their way through Awake, Whatever[, and I Stand Alone. Drummer Shannon Larkin beat the hell out his drums (he had 2 kits on stage) like a possessed madman while bassist Robby Merril just looked a bit braindead but hit his notes perfectly. It was Vocalist / Guitarist Sully Erna that kept the crowd in the palm of his hand during the whole one hour set! Great set by these guys!
Now for the Almighty METALLICA!!!!!![ They opened with Blackened and had a bunch of really weird rustic looking lamps on stage. Couple that, with smoke rising from the stage, and it looked like the band were playing in the middle of a old wild west town, with a small feel of a Dillinger Escape Planshow. That didn’t last long, because it was only a matter of time before all the massive amounts of lighting rigs lit up halfway through the song. And of course, with Fuel being the second song in, there was massive amounts of pyro was being being fired off. The biggest surprise of the night, was how good the song]Dirty Window (off St. Anger sounded. Other goodies that were played were Leper Messiah, Battery, Creeping Death, One, Sad But True ]Enter Sandman, Holier Than Thou, and ]The Unforgiven Part 1[.
There a few sloppy parts on the behalf of lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, but overall, the band did a killer performance. They even closed the show with Die Die My Darling (Misfits[/b:b1659a8c8d] Cover) andSeek And Destroy/
Note: I saw Shannon Larkin play drums for his old punk band Amen two times back in 2000, playing on one small rinky-dink drum kit and he was just beating the living snot out of his drums then. I seriously thought the guy was a psychopath back then, even though he did not miss a beat… glad to see he has lost a step. =) Even talked to Godsmack mainman Sully Erna for a few minutes. Super nice guy he is, and he gave me and a few of his friends the heads up on when Metallica’s super-loud pyro was going to fire off. Thanks Sully, you more than likely saved my hearing. – said Joshua V. on Nov 11, 2004
